Legislation for foreigners, orphans and widows in the Pentateuch sought to ensure that these vulnerable groups were treated with compassion and justice within Israelite society. These laws reflect a concern that included protection and justice, economic provision, inclusion in celebrations, warnings against abuse; as well as some specific considerations about marriage, stutus and inheritance.
Thus, this legislation not only had a practical purpose of social protection, but was deeply intertwined with the religious, ethical and historical identity of the Israelite people.
