Anxiety, depression and spiritual well-being in university students during COVID-19 confinement

Abstract

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic, threatened the physical health of the population and affected mental health, due to confinement in confinement and loss of daily social relationships.

Objective: To determine the level of anxiety, depression and spiritual well-being in university students during COVID-19 confinement.

Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with university students in Mexico, under randomized probability sampling, by applying the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and Spiritual Well-Being Scale. Data analysis was nonparametric.

Results: A total of 364 students participated, with an average age of 20 years and standard deviation ±3.37, predominantly women (205), single (353), Mexican (317), in their third year (151), in the health area (133). Of the total, 44.8% (163) did not present anxiety, 16.5% (60) were doubtful cases and 38.7% (141) were significant cases. 74.4% (271) did not present depression, 15.7% (57) were doubtful and 9.9% (36) were significant. The level of spiritual well-being was established as 10.44% (38) low; 44.78% (163) moderate and 44.78% (163) high. Regarding anxiety, a statistically significant association was found related to sex (p=0.013); for depression in terms of nationality (p=0.038) and for spiritual well-being in terms of sex (p=0.023) and faculty (p=0.001).

Conclusion: More than half of the students presented anxiety at different levels, the majority did not present depression and moderate and high level of spiritual well-being. Inquiring about anxiety, depression and spiritual well-being with the instruments used seems to be an accessible and reliable method.
