Objective: To determine the effectiveness of physical activity on health-related quality of life in women with breast cancer.
Methods: Systematic review, six databases consulted, a manual search in six specialized journals and references of the retrieved articles. Randomized controlled trials comparing physical activity-based interventions on health-related quality of life in women with breast cancer were selected. The risk of bias of each included study was assessed and a subsequent analysis of the methodological quality for the proposed outcomes (health-related quality of life, breast cancer, physical activity,) was performed, for data extraction and analysis, variability and statistical heterogeneity were studied, finally, a qualitative synthesis of the findings of each included study is performed.
Results: Data from studies were included for their relevance and quality. Twenty-six of the studies led to an improvement in functional capacity, social functionality and emotional well-being (p>0.05); however, two of the studies evidenced no improvement of physical activity on quality of life, as adequate pre-study information was not collected (p<0.05).
Conclusions: It can be evidenced that physical activity in most of the studies included in this systematic review, support the importance and benefits that exercise has on the quality of life of each of the participants with breast cancer, regardless of the stage of the disease or their current treatment. However, due to the heterogeneity of the data extracted, it is not possible to identify a specific therapeutic exercise program, or a specific duration or intensity that reports the greatest effectiveness in the health-related quality of life of the population studied.
